Styles for Success: 25 Years of Meeting Your Special Hair Needs
April 12, 2017
“I get paid to do something I love,” says a smiling Stella Evans, “and drink coffee,” she adds with a laugh, enjoying a moment of relaxation in her sunlit office. Stella is the owner of Styles for Success, a local hair salon proudly celebrating 25 years of business this spring.
“The Warehouse District was a strategically chosen location because of the high volume of men back in the 1990’s,” Stella fondly remembers, reminiscing on the salon’s early days when it was first established in ‘92 by her sister Lorraine Scheltgen-Ludwar and Lorraine’s partner, Lynn Banford. Styles for Success originally specialized in male hair care, and owes its initial popularity to something as simple as sandwich boards and a catchy slogan. Their Men Wanted trademark brought in bunches of new clients over the years, and positioned the salon as a frequented destination amongst blue collar workers. Yet as the neighbourhood evolved, so did the salon. Styles for Success now happily offers women’s cuts and colours, as well as facial and arm waxing, and sells a variety of styling products from Nioxin to American Crew to Schwarzkopf.
Stella’s involvement in Styles for Success came about slowly but surely. After completing Beauty College in Regina, she moved to Calgary where she opened her own salon. Business had taken off, but she was working long hours to satisfy a large client base and longed for more quality time with her family. When Stella’s sister Lorraine asked her to collaborate as a partner in Styles for Success, she leaped at the opportunity to return home to Saskatchewan.
As a stylist, Stella has been able to pursue a similar area that she is passionate about– custom hair pieces for men. And these aren’t the types of toupees you often see in the movies: awkward, mis-shaped, and surely not the person’s real hair. They are beautifully crafted by Stella herself and custom made for each individual through a long and intricate process. She starts by taking a mould of the client’s scalp, followed by ordering a unique hair piece that can vary in hair density and texture, as well as other aesthetics such as the part on the head and the shade of the highlights. Lastly, she cuts and styles accordingly. Stella’s hair pieces last anywhere from 18 months to 2 years and range from approximately $1,000 to $1,700 in price. Best of all, they can be designed for anyone, from someone looking for a thick, full head of hair to someone who wants a natural look reflective of their age.
Stella was joined by stylist Selene Cyca this past November. She specializes in ladies’ hair and has a special knack for balayage colour.
“Our clients describe our salon as a fun and relaxing environment. We hang out, cut people’s hair, and make them feel their best!” says Stella enthusiastically, pointing out that Styles for Success is the only salon in the city that still has private styling rooms. The quiet and comfort that these rooms offer are just one of the many reasons customers return time and again.
“We’re accommodating to anyone who walks through our doors, and the Warehouse District is the perfect location for the salon. Parking is great, we’re accessible, and we appeal to people from all over the city”.
Styles for Success offers first-time client discounts: $22 for a men’s cut and $30 for women’s. The salon is open Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30-6:00 pm, Fridays from 8:30-5:00 pm and Wednesdays and Saturdays by request. They gladly welcome walk-ins.
