HBI Office Plus Inc: A Western Canadian Company with Local Roots!
September 26, 2016
With the Back to School and Back to Business season quickly approaching, organizations both large and small will be searching for affordable solutions to their day-to-day office supply needs. If your business is one of them, look no further than the Warehouse District’s own HBI Office Plus Inc. located at 1162 Osler Street!
Originally established as Brennan Educational in 1969, the company became HBI office Plus Inc. in 2008 and currently has 55 employees working in a variety of roles including customer support, administration, sales, and warehousing. Aside from their head office in Regina, HBI also has offices located in Saskatoon, Swift Current, Prince Albert, and Calgary. HBI is the only locally-owned and operated business that competes in both the stationery and furniture segments of the larger office supply marketplace.
While HBI provides services to a variety of different clients, most of their activity come from business to business (B2B) transactions, as well as contracts with educational institutions, and government agencies. “We cover everything from daycare to post-secondary institutions,” says HBI CFO Carlene Watson.
In addition to its more conventional stationery and furniture offerings, HBI has an architectural solutions division that specializes in creating modular work environments for clients. “Modular walls provide flexibility for a client to upgrade or change their office environment,” says Jay Sullivan, Vice President of Sales when asked to elaborate on the benefits of this service. “A lot of the office trends today are leaning toward a more “open office” concept that is increasingly popular among a younger demographic of professionals,” he adds.
Jay notes that while the cost of building a modular office environment might be higher initially, in the long run it actually saves money and is ideal for tenant improvement. “We can go in and renovate a client’s existing modular workspace in a couple of hours whereas the drywalling option can take up to a few weeks,” says Jay, speaking to the advantages that modular work environments have over traditional renovations.
A core element of HBI’s mission statement is taking pride in the community of which it serves. The company is quite active in supporting a variety of worthwhile causes, including sponsoring a slow-pitch team that raises awareness for cancer research, as well as financial support to sports teams such as the Regina Rams and the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Taking it a step further, the company also provides funding dedicated to the preferred charitable initiatives of its clients.
Not content with the status quo, HBI already has its sights set for future growth. From a geographical standpoint, HBI sees great potential for growth in Alberta. In addition to expanding
its regional footprint, the company is in the process of expanding its product lines to include more janitorial, sanitation, and breakroom supplies. “Carlene sums up the company’s mission statement moving forward, “We want to be a one-stop shop for our customers.”
