Bushwakker Mead Day 2016 – The Tradition Continues!
Bushwakker Mead Day Makes its Annual Return!
One of Saskatchewan’s biggest cultural phenomena occurs only once a year on the first Saturday of every December. Regina’s own Bushwakker Brewpub is set to release the 2016 edition of its very popular, very rare and very Saskatchewan Blackberry Mead on Saturday, December 3th at 11:00 AM.
Every year hundreds of customers line-up hours in advance to take home the highly coveted melomel. The independent, family owned and operated brewpub is making final preparations for its official kickoff to the holiday season. Newly-promoted Bushwakker head brewer and company president’s grandson, Michael Gaetz, has now taken over the production of this much-beloved honey and blackberry nectar in anticipation of the brewpub’s busiest day of the entire year. 400 pounds of Lumsden Valley honey and 84 pounds of blackberries are used in each 800 litre tank of mead. A portion of this year’s production will be bottled and the remainder will be served on tap. Last year the entire Blackberry Mead off-sale inventory of over 6000 – 650 ml bottles sold out in less than two hours.
The line-up of Blackberry Mead enthusiasts continues to form earlier each year. A new record was set in 2015. The first customers began setting up their ice fishing tents around 7:00 PM on Friday night, a full 15 hours before the mead went on sale. Others soon followed and the line-up of shelters extended down Dewdney Avenue and onto Cornwall Street before midnight. Eager mead fans came prepared to endure a long wait in a Saskatchewan winter evening by outfitting their shelters with propane heaters, patio chairs, couches, grills, music and video game systems.
A special treat will be made available to the first 80 customers in line this year. They will have the opportunity to purchase the Bushwakker 25th Anniversary Commemorative Extra-Aged Blackberry Mead which has been mellowing for 12 months in the Bushwakker mead cellar. Brewer Michael will be serving free hot chocolate to all those in line. The Blackberry Mead Line Enforcement Crew will also be present to ensure there is no butting-in-line.Mead trivia questions will be posed to those in line and prizes will be given to the winners.
A writing contest is also underway where mead enthusiasts are asked to submit a poem titled, “Why I Love Blackberry Mead.” The prize for the composer of the most creative entry will receive the honour of being crowned King or Queen Bee on Mead Day. They will be wined and dined for free whilst perched upon a massive elevated throne in the brewpub and will wear a royal robe and crown complete with antennae.
Local artist and designer, Gavin de Lint, has created limited edition commemorative 2016 Bushwakker “A Friend With Mead is a Friend Indeed” t-shirts which will be unveiled on December 3rd. Blackberry Mead cheesecake will also be available. Take home bottle purchases will be limited to 12 bottles per person and in-house purchases will be limited to two 12 ounce glasses per person per visit. $75 for a six-pack or $150 for 12 bottles.
